Humic Acid Complexes Simply Explained
Humic acid complexes are formed during the slow decomposition of plants, especially from lignin, and occur in soils, peat, lignite, and shilajit.
1. What Is Humic Acid Complexes?
Humic acid complexes are mixtures of large organic molecules. They form when dead plant substance is broken down and transformed over a long time. The most important starting material is lignin, the woody substance of plants. There is no uniform humic acid. Origin, degree of maturity, and extraction determine which molecules a preparation contains. A distinction is made between humic acids, fulvic acids, and humins.
2. Where Is It Found, and What Is It Made From?
Humic acid complexes occur in soils, peat and bog, lignite and leonardite, compost, as well as in rivers, lakes, and their sediments. Shilajit, also called mumijo, is a resinous substance that emerges from rock in high mountains such as the Himalayas and the Altai. Preparations for ingestion are mainly obtained from leonardite, lignite, or peat. The humic substances are dissolved with lye, separated, and purified. Shilajit is purified and dried. In addition, there is fulvic acid, which is produced from carbohydrates. For baths and packs, medicinal peat is used.

Bones, Joints and Muscles
For bones, joints, and muscles, there are many studies with mostly positive results. Peat applications relieved pain in knee osteoarthritis and back pain in controlled studies (with a comparison group) 161722. In another study, peat, ultrasound, and magnetic treatment helped with back pain; for pain, ultrasound worked best 23. With shilajit, muscle strength increased and fatigue-related loss of strength decreased 618. After a tibial fracture, the bone healed faster with mumijo 5. Oral potassium humate relieved pain in knee osteoarthritis in a small randomized (participants assigned by lot) study 14. The strength of evidence is high, but many studies are small.
Hormones and Fertility
In men, testosterone increased with shilajit in three randomized studies 6719. A review classifies shilajit as possibly effective in men with late-onset hypogonadism (testosterone deficiency in old age) 3. One study found a better sexual response 7, another an increase in DHEAS (a hormone of the adrenal gland) 19. A combination preparation of shilajit with herbs improved testosterone in a randomized controlled study 8. The strength of evidence is high, but the studies almost exclusively tested shilajit in men.
Energy, Performance and Fatigue
In two randomized studies in men, shilajit improved muscular endurance 6 and maximal oxygen uptake 7. In addition, perceived exertion 6 and exhaustion 7 decreased. The strength of evidence is high, but the controlled studies predominantly tested shilajit alone or in mixtures. They mostly included healthy, trained men and were partly small.
Inflammation and Immune System
In hay fever and atopy (tendency to allergies), skin tests turned out weaker in two small studies, with fulvic acid 13 and with oral potassium humate 11. The potassium humate study also found a more favorable eosinophil count (certain immune cells), while other immune cell functions remained unchanged 11. The strength of evidence is moderate: the controlled studies are small, some without a placebo group (sham). A case report describes an exercise-induced anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction during exertion) in which shilajit was considered a co-trigger 31.
Metabolism and Blood Sugar
A randomized study with shilajit gummies found no difference in body weight, BMI, and waist circumference 7. The strength of evidence is moderate. It remains open whether the effects are due solely to the humic acid complexes and whether they can be confirmed in healthy people.
Skin and Wounds
In eczema, doctors assessed the result with topical fulvic acid as better than with a plain care cream; however, severity and redness improved in both groups 12. In a study with a comparison group but without randomization, middle-aged women had more blood flow in the skin after taking shilajit. The activity of genes for connective tissue and vessels also changed 26. The strength of evidence is moderate; the studies are small, and the shilajit study is not randomized. It remains open whether the findings apply to other preparations and over longer periods.
Digestion and Gut
For digestion and the gut, two controlled studies are available. In people with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, a randomized study found no confirmed difference from placebo with humic acids 15. Women responded better than men 15. A wellness drink with fulvic acid was overall well tolerated in a controlled study of 332 HIV-positive people 20. However, gastrointestinal complaints occurred more frequently with it than with placebo 20. The strength of evidence is overall unclear.
Brain and Cognition
For the brain and mental performance, only observations without a control group are available for humic acid complexes. A study without a comparison group reports a better mood after rhythmic rubbing with Solum oil, a peat extract with lavender oil 27. Another study reports a better mood after a peat bath 28. Two review articles suggest benefits for mental performance from shilajit 32 and in neurodegenerative diseases from fulvic acid 33. Since no controlled studies are available, the strength of evidence is unclear.
Other Outcomes
After disc surgery, everyday resilience improved with peat mud applications 21. In knee osteoarthritis, general health status improved with peat compresses 22. With shilajit, perceived stress 7 and signs of oxidative stress 10 decreased. With mumijo, a lowered platelet count (blood platelets) was less common 24. A randomized study with shilajit showed lower muscle damage values 6. With potassium humate, the liver value GGT temporarily rose in four participants, and with placebo in two 14. A meta-analysis (joint evaluation of many studies) on mud therapy found no increase in serious adverse events 1.
4. How Was Humic Acid Complexes Taken in the Studies?
The studies mainly investigated shilajit as a capsule, gummies, or resin. Peat applications were tested as a bath, pack, and peloid (mud). Oral humates and fulvic acid were also studied. Some preparations were mixtures, such as shilajit with herbs or fulvic acid in a wellness drink. The doses and application durations are shown in the table.
5. Is Humic Acid Complexes Safe? Side Effects in the Studies
The studies predominantly report good tolerability. Temporary skin redness and fatigue were mentioned more frequently with mud and peat applications. Short-lasting burning occurred with topical fulvic acid. Gastrointestinal complaints occurred with a fulvic acid-containing drink. A case report describes an exercise-induced anaphylaxis in which shilajit was considered a co-trigger. In one study, the liver value GGT temporarily rose with potassium humate in four participants and with placebo in two.
