Collagen Simply Explained
Collagen is the most common protein in the body and is found in skin, bones and joints.
1. What Is Collagen?
Collagen is a protein and occurs in the human body more frequently than any other protein. It forms, so to speak, the basic framework of skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bones and blood vessels. Today there are also collagen preparations as powder, drink or capsule.
2. Where Is It Found, and What Is It Made From?
Collagen is naturally present in the connective tissue of humans and animals, especially in skin, tendons, cartilage and bones. For preparations, it is obtained from animal skins, bones and cartilage, as well as from fish skin and fish scales. From this starting material, gelatin is produced by heating or collagen peptides by splitting into smaller parts. In studies, mainly these collagen peptides, gelatin and non-denatured type II collagen from cartilage were tested.
3. What Does Collagen Do? What Research Shows
| Area | State of research | Studies |
|---|---|---|
| Joints and joint pain | well studied, mostly positive | 74 |
| Skin and skin elasticity | well studied, mostly positive | 66 |
| Musculature | several indications | 46 |
| Bone density | several indications | 24 |
| Tendons and ligaments | well studied, mostly positive | 17 |
| Hair and nails | several indications | 8 |
| Other investigations | well studied, mostly positive | 90 |
Joints and Joint Pain
For joint pain and knee osteoarthritis, several studies showed improvements in pain and movement with collagen peptides 69181934. Non-denatured type II collagen improved knee mobility compared with placebo (sham) in three studies 293945. Individual studies tested combination preparations with other substances, whose result cannot be attributed to collagen alone 2030. Many studies were small and short.
Skin and Skin Elasticity
For skin elasticity and skin moisture, several studies showed improvements with collagen peptides 2457122122. Wrinkles, skin roughness and skin density also improved more than with placebo in several studies 42224252638. In contrast, three studies found no difference from placebo in skin elasticity, skin thickness or skin moisture 273243. Two studies tested combination preparations with other substances, one of them funded by the manufacturer 3740.
Musculature
With strength training, fat-free mass, meaning primarily muscle, increased more under collagen peptides than under placebo 82835424654. Muscle strength increased more than under placebo only in some of the studies 3546424950. The findings come predominantly from small, short studies in trained or older adults.
Bone Density
A review found higher bone density under collagen peptides, especially together with calcium and vitamin D 16. In postmenopausal women with slightly reduced bone density, collagen peptides together with calcium and vitamin D improved bone density more than calcium and vitamin D alone 4748. Other studies in older adults after hip surgery, in older men with muscle wasting, and in young men found no difference in bone mass or bone values in the blood 465158. The positive findings concerned predominantly postmenopausal women, and the groups were small.
Tendons and Ligaments
With strength training, tendon thickness increased more with collagen peptides than with training alone 1749505556. Tendon stiffness improved in individual studies with collagen peptides plus vitamin C 565760, while other studies found no difference here 17495052. The findings are based predominantly on small, short studies in healthy, training men.
Hair and Nails
In one study, nail color in healthy women improved earlier with collagen peptides than with placebo 33. In a study with collagen peptides and vitamin C, hair appearance improved compared with placebo, with no confirmed difference in hair count 61. The evidence is moderate, the groups were small, and the intake periods were partly short.
Other Investigations
Fat mass decreased more with collagen peptides than with placebo in several studies 28313646, but not in others 414453. Quality of life improved in several studies 236264. Taken before sleep, collagen peptides reduced nighttime awakening in one study, but not sleep duration or sleep quality 59. The findings apply to the respective forms studied, mostly collagen peptides as a drink or capsule over several weeks.
4. How Was Collagen Taken in the Studies?
In the studies, mainly collagen peptides were taken as a drink, powder or capsule, partly over several weeks to months. Non-denatured type II collagen was tested in capsule form, gelatin in individual studies on muscle soreness and recovery. Several studies examined combination preparations, for example with vitamin C, calcium and vitamin D, chicken essence or other substances. The exact amounts and intake periods are given in the study cards and tables.
5. Is Collagen Safe? Side Effects in the Studies
Collagen peptides, gelatin and non-denatured type II collagen are different preparations and are not interchangeable. Many studies were small and short, and several tested combination preparations whose result cannot be attributed to collagen alone. Information on manufacturer funding is often missing.
