Systematic Review with Network Meta-Analysis: Protein Supplementation Plus Exercise in Sarcopenia

Last updated:

A systematic review with network meta-analysis compared different protein or protein-related supplementation strategies combined with resistance or functional exercise in older adults with sarcopenia. For grip strength, potential outcome-specific effects emerged for several strategies, including HMB, whey- or leucine-enriched protein supplementation, and whey protein with essential amino acids and vitamin D. For muscle mass index, a potential effect emerged for whey- or leucine-enriched protein supplementation.

What the Research Says

The authors point to a sparse evidence network and very low certainty of evidence. The potential effect on timed up-and-go performance was based on limited evidence and may largely reflect the contribution of the exercise components.
