Gamma-Oryzanol Explained Simply

Gamma-Oryzanol is found in the outer layer of the rice grain. This page explains in simple words what has been investigated about it – for anyone who wants an overview.

1. What It Is About

Gamma-oryzanol is a mixture of several similar plant substances. It occurs naturally in the bran layer of rice – the thin layer directly beneath the husk of the rice grain. It is obtained from rice bran oil, a by-product that arises during rice processing. Depending on the rice variety and processing, varying amounts are present.

Research focuses mainly on two areas: metabolism and skin. Most studies, however, are basic research, that is, experiments in cell cultures or animals, and not studies in humans.

Important for understanding: gamma-oryzanol is rarely investigated alone. Almost all studies use rice bran oil or extracts thereof that still contain many other substances. It is therefore often impossible to determine what part of an observation is attributable to gamma-oryzanol itself and what to the accompanying substances.

2. What Studies Show

The most striking human study dates from 2005. Thirty men with mildly elevated cholesterol consumed rice bran oil daily for four weeks, once with a low and once with a high gamma-oryzanol content. In both groups total cholesterol and especially the “bad” LDL cholesterol declined. There was no clear difference between the two amounts – an indication that the effect does not depend solely on gamma-oryzanol 1.

A 2014 study examined healthy men who performed strength training. Changes in body measurements and muscle strength were described 4. The study ran for only a short time, and how the effects arise remained open.

Clearer is an observational study with 119 women. One group received, in addition to a hormone preparation of estradiol and dydrogesterone, also gamma-oryzanol. These women had higher bone density and slept better – they woke less often at night. Because both were always given together, the study says nothing about what gamma-oryzanol alone achieves 5.

In a study with a combined dietary supplement in people with elevated blood lipids, lower inflammatory markers in the blood were also measured 2. This is an indication, but not yet confirmed, and the values come from the laboratory – it was not observed whether a disease improved. In cell cultures and animal experiments fewer inflammatory and stress markers likewise appeared, yet without evidence that gamma-oryzanol is responsible.

Regarding tolerability, clinical observations report a favourable profile with few adverse effects 6. A computer study calculated that gamma-oryzanol could bind to a protein of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2; this was tested only on the computer, not in an experiment – so far this is only a hypothesis 3.

3. What Remains Unclear

The largest open question: almost all studies used rice bran oil or extracts thereof, not gamma-oryzanol alone. As long as this remains the case, the observed effects cannot be assigned unambiguously. A study with pure gamma-oryzanol is still outstanding 6.

Little is also known about absorption in the body. In the intestine gamma-oryzanol is partly broken down, so that only a portion reaches the blood unchanged. Whether the effects observed in cell cultures occur in the same way in humans is therefore a testable question that remains open.

Long-term use, higher amounts and special groups such as children, pregnant women or people with liver and kidney problems have so far been scarcely investigated. This also applies to possible interactions with medicinal products.

4. What This Means in Everyday Life

Gamma-oryzanol is a substance from a natural food, rice. Rice bran oil is used as a cooking oil, and research on it has grown over decades. Anyone reading studies on this topic should keep in mind who was investigated and what exactly was given: usually it was the oil as a whole, not the single substance.

In the studies available, changes in blood lipid values were described, and tolerability was reported as favourable. What follows for the individual cannot be derived from these studies.

Clarity would come from an investigation with pure gamma-oryzanol, over a longer period and at several doses. It would then be possible to separate what the substance itself achieves and what the accompanying substances in rice bran oil do.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gamma-Oryzanol?

A mixture of several similar plant substances that is found in the bran layer of the rice grain and is obtained from rice bran oil. In studies it is usually not used alone, but together with the other substances of the oil.

Does Gamma-Oryzanol lower cholesterol?

In a study with 30 men, rice bran oil lowered the “bad” LDL cholesterol. Whether this was due to Gamma-Oryzanol or the accompanying substances could not be separated. A statement solely about Gamma-Oryzanol is therefore not possible.

Is Gamma-Oryzanol well tolerated?

In clinical observations, tolerability was described as favourable, with few adverse effects. Data on long-term use and higher amounts are still outstanding.
