Observational Study in Young Adults: Ten Minutes of Daily Exercise Linked to Deeper Sleep

Last updated:

Among young adults (university students wearing Fitbits), more frequent exercise went with more deep, restorative sleep. Just ten minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per day was associated with measurable benefits, and even light activities like walking and standing breaks were linked to better sleep and mood.

1. What the Research Says

The study from The University of Texas at Austin used several months of Fitbit data from university students to examine the link between how often they moved and their sleep quality. As an observational finding it cannot prove that the exercise causes the deeper sleep.

2. How It Fits Earlier Research

Earlier research on physical activity and sleep points in the same direction: regular and single bouts of exercise were accompanied by better sleep, including more slow wave sleep. The new observational finding fits this picture, but like the earlier work it cannot show that exercise causes the deeper sleep. The effects of physical activity on sleep: a meta-analytic review.
