Epitalon Simply Explained
Epitalon is an artificially produced substance being investigated in ageing research. This page explains in simple terms what is currently known about it and where research remains open.
1. What It Is About
Epitalon is a synthetically produced substance made from four small building blocks, the amino acids. Such short chains are called peptides. Epitalon was developed in the 1970s in the Soviet Union. It is modelled on the natural peptide Epithalamin, which is obtained from the pineal gland. The pineal gland is a small gland in the brain. It helps to regulate the sleep-wake rhythm and the release of hormones. For this reason Epitalon is investigated mainly in ageing research and cancer research. Because the molecule is very small, it could cross the blood-brain barrier in animal studies — the barrier between blood and brain. Important for understanding the studies: most investigations in humans were carried out with the related peptide Epithalamin, not with Epitalon itself.
2. What Studies Show
The most informative are two long-term studies in older people. Both examined Epithalamin, the related peptide. In one study lasting twelve years the participants received Epithalamin. At the end, markedly fewer people in this group had died than in the comparison group. Deaths from cardiovascular diseases occurred markedly less often, heart failure and respiratory diseases were less frequent, and the participants were able to exert themselves physically better 2. In a second study 39 people received several courses of Epithalamin in addition to usual treatment, while 40 people received only usual treatment. In the treated group the heart and blood vessels aged more slowly, the sleep rhythm regulated by the hormone melatonin became more regular, and sugar and fat metabolism stabilised. Fewer participants died in this group as well 1. A third observation over 30 months followed the immune system. In the treated patients the seasonal fluctuations of defence cells normalised and the course of the disease was more favourable 3. Whether the patients derived noticeable benefit from this was not examined. For Epitalon itself no such studies in humans exist yet. The indications come from cell cultures and animal experiments. There Epitalon activated telomerase, an enzyme that protects the ends of genetic information. In addition, the body’s own protective substances against aggressive oxygen compounds became more active. In mice Epitalon extended lifespan, and in mice with a hereditary retinal disease it protected the retina. In human cell cultures the protective caps of genetic information became longer 4. In rats Epithalamin reduced the frequency of breast tumours. Such an effect has not been investigated in humans.
3. What Remains Unclear
Almost all studies on Epitalon come from a single research group. This makes independent verification of the results more difficult. Randomised controlled studies in humans are still lacking for Epitalon itself, that is studies in which chance decides who receives the substance and who receives a placebo. Long-term safety data are also still lacking. Many measured values in the human studies are laboratory values or questionnaires. They do not directly indicate whether people live longer or better. Results from cell cultures and animal experiments cannot be transferred directly to humans. It is also open whether the observed effects really result from Epitalon or from other accompanying circumstances of the treatment. It is furthermore unclear whether the effect proceeds via a specific mechanism or via general protective actions.
4. What This Means in Everyday Life
Anyone following the research on Epitalon should distinguish two things: the studies with the related peptide Epithalamin in humans and the work on Epitalon itself, which was carried out predominantly in cells and animals. The long-term study with Epithalamin is noteworthy because it ran over many years and recorded mortality. However, it does not concern Epitalon. The findings on Epitalon are therefore more an indication of a possible mechanism of action than a confirmed statement about humans. The next step required would be randomised studies on Epitalon itself that also record safety over a longer period. Only then can it be said whether the laboratory findings hold in humans.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Epitalon the same as Epithalamin?
No. Epithalamin is obtained from the pineal gland, Epitalon is artificially produced and modelled after it. Most human studies were conducted with Epithalamin.
Can Epitalon extend life?
Longer lifespans were observed in mice and other animals. Whether this also applies to humans has not been investigated. The human studies concern a related peptide and mainly record laboratory values and disease courses.
Is Epitalon safe?
No toxic effects were reported in long-term animal studies. Controlled studies on safety in humans are still outstanding, as are systematic data on side effects.
